Dr. Jaglas Mulled Wine Herb Elixir 50 ml. Spice liqueur made from mulled wine herbs, 28% vol – the winter variety in mini format.

Dr. Jaglas Mulled Wine Herb Elixir is a spice liqueur from Berlin: bitter orange and orange peel, clove, cardamom, star anise, vanilla, and cinnamon bark, 28% vol, 50 ml in a mini bottle. Not a mulled wine to be heated up, not punch syrup, not a wine base – a winter liqueur for small glasses.

Mulled Wine Herb Elixir by Dr. Jaglas is a pot of mulled wine in a bottle: a pot requires red wine, time, and a stove; the elixir only needs a glass. Cinnamon, clove, orange, and star anise rise up just like at a Christmas market, only without the wine underneath. As a mini, you get enough for an Advent evening with a few experiments: a splash in sparkling wine, a spoonful in hot chocolate, a drop in tiramisu.

Cinnamon and clove at the front, orange and vanilla behind

The liqueur tastes like what’s in the mulled wine pot: cinnamon bark, clove, star anise, anise, and cardamom, plus orange peel. Coriander and bitter orange peel give it freshness so the sweetness isn't cloying. Vanilla and licorice provide a sweet base, while walnut shell and red grapes add dark depth. Dr. Jaglas calls it a rich, high-proof winter liqueur. If you prefer something lighter in the winter, try the Apple-Mallow Elixir in the mini size.

In sparkling wine, in chocolate, in tiramisu, and in red cabbage

At room temperature, 2 cl in a small glass, the liqueur reveals all its spices. The mini is enough for a good two glasses. As an aperitif, pour 2 cl into a champagne flute and top with sparkling wine; with tonic water, it becomes a long drink. Stir 2 cl into hot chocolate, replace amaretto with it in wintery tiramisu, and a spoonful adds spice to red cabbage or gravy. It is a spirit with 28% vol and is for ages 18 and up.

Our tip: 2 cl in a cup of dark chocolate hot cocoa, topped with an orange zest – our substitute for mulled wine on a Sunday afternoon.

The winter variety from the family pharmacy

Dr. Jaglas is a Berlin-based manufacturer at Choriner Straße 40, originating from a family of pharmacists. The elixir is the winter specialty of the range. According to the manufacturer, it is elaborately produced and aged for a long time. It first became known through the wine bar of a Berlin gourmet restaurant; today it appears as a strictly limited edition. The step onto the shelf is the Mulled Wine Herb Elixir in 500 ml.

Advent gift, Secret Santa present, and trial for the Christmas menu

According to the manufacturer, the edition is released at the start of the cold season; the mini gives you the opportunity to try it early in the autumn. The mini fits in a Saint Nicholas boot, in an Advent calendar you fill yourself, and in a letter to friends who like mulled wine. For comparison, there is the tart Artichoke Bitter as a mini; all elixirs are on our Dr. Jaglas page. The liqueur is not suitable for anyone expecting a bottle of mulled wine to heat up – it is a liqueur for small glasses.

Dr. Jaglas
