Dr. Jagla's Artichoke Elixir 50 ml. Herbal bitter with artichoke and gentian, 35% vol – the Berlin classic in mini format.

Dr. Jagla's Artichoke Elixir is a herbal bitter from Berlin: regional artichokes with gentian root, centaury, cardamom, ginger, and a hint of saffron, 35% vol, 50 ml in a mini bottle. Not a sweet liqueur, not a pre-mixed cocktail, not a bulk bottle – a bitter to sample.

Artichoke Elixir by Dr. Jagla is a matter of taste – and 500 ml is a lot of bottle for a matter of taste. That is exactly why the mini exists. After two glasses, you will know whether you like the spicy-bitter composition with its subtle sweetness, without having to reserve space on your shelf. The distillery describes it as a mini version of the popular bitter liqueur from Berlin and a perfect small gift for anyone who enjoys a good bitter.

Spicy-bitter with subtle sweetness and a long finish

The bitter herbs unfold with a spicy character, underpinned by a subtle sweetness on the palate, and the finish remains long. Gentian root, centaury, and cinchona bark provide the bitterness; cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove provide the spice; and bitter orange peel, juniper, and lavender provide the freshness. The amber color is natural. Those who prefer something rounder and softer should reach for the Golfer's Ginseng Elixir mini – the milder variety in the same format. The artichoke bitter pairs well with cheese, dark chocolate, and nut-based pastries.

Neat after a meal or as a tonic with lime

Neat or over ice, 2 cl after a meal is the classic way to enjoy it. The mini is enough for a good two glasses. For the distillery's Artichoke Tonic, pour 30 ml of elixir into a glass, squeeze in half a lime, and top up with tonic water to 100 ml. It is a spirit with 35% vol and is for ages 18 and up.

Our tip: Roll the first sip slowly in the front of your mouth, as you would at a wine tasting – this allows the herbs to reveal themselves one after the other rather than all at once.

15th-century monastery recipe, macerated in small batches

Dr. Jagla is a Berlin-based distillery located at Choriner Straße 40, originating from a family of pharmacists. Their recipe dates back to a 15th-century monastery pharmacy formula; individual production steps follow the Pharmacopoea Germanica, the old German pharmacopoeia. The herbs are macerated by hand and aged for several months. If you like the mini, make the leap to the shelf with the large 500 ml bottle: the same bitter, many times the number of glasses.

Sample bottle, small gift, and bitter for on the go

The mini is the perfect small gift for hosts who appreciate a good bitter. It serves as a trial for the bitter-skeptic in your circle of friends and is a handy little bottle for your travel bag. Anyone looking for something sweeter afterward should try the Apple Mallow Elixir; all bottles can be found on our Dr. Jagla page. The Artichoke Elixir is not suitable for those who want something sweet after a meal – it remains a bitter.

Artichoke Elixir as a herbal bitter in a 50 ml mini bottle – to sample, give as a gift, and take with you.

Dr. Jaglas
