Sasse Sechser Herbal Liqueur 700 ml. Organic herbal liqueur made from six macerated botanicals, finished with Jamaican rum, 35% ABV.
Sasse Sechser Herbal Liqueur is an organic natural liqueur from the Sasse craft distillery in Schöppingen in the Münsterland: six botanicals, including angelica, calamus and bitter orange, macerated in alcohol and finished with Jamaican rum, 35% ABV, 700 ml. This refers to the organic natural liqueur, not the half-bitter with a similar name – a multi-layered herbal liqueur made from a base recipe that is over 100 years old, according to the manufacturer.
Sasse's Sechser herbal liqueur is made through maceration. Herbs, roots and fruit peels are steeped in alcohol, gradually releasing their aromas. Sasse calls this the oldest and gentlest method of producing a herbal elixir. Among the six botanicals listed by the manufacturer are angelica and calamus as spicy roots, as well as orange, lemon and bitter orange. Then comes the step that sets the Sechser apart from many herbal liqueurs: it is finished with aromatic Jamaican rum. Imagine a long table after a family meal, the plates have been cleared, and someone takes the bottle of herbs out of the cupboard.
Herbal, multi-layered and with a Caribbean hint of rum
The Sechser tastes intensely of herbs, and in several layers. Angelica and calamus stand for spice and bitterness, while the three citrus fruits provide zest and freshness. Over this lies the Jamaican rum, which according to the manufacturer brings a Caribbean hint – a warm roundness that takes the edge off the herbs.
At 35% ABV, it is stronger than the cream liqueurs from the same house and significantly more herbal. Anyone looking for a smooth, sweet dessert liqueur will find it more likely with Paula Pumpernickel, for example in the Herrencreme Liqueur.
Neat in a small glass, at room temperature or well chilled
A herbal liqueur like the Sechser is best enjoyed neat in a small glass; 2 cl is enough. Sasse does not provide a strict serving recommendation for the organic Sechser. At room temperature, the herbs are most pronounced; well chilled, it tastes smoother, and the rum recedes slightly. It goes well on the table after a hearty meal, with an evening snack, or as a relaxed end to a barbecue. It is a spirit with 35% ABV; it is only sold to persons aged 18 or over.
Store the bottle upright, in a cool and dark place, even after opening.
Our tip: Rub a thin orange peel over the glass before pouring – the oil from the peel brings the citrus side of the orange and bitter orange to the fore.
A base recipe over 100 years old and rum straight from Jamaica
According to the Sasse craft distillery, the organic Sechser is their oldest unchanged product. The base recipe is over 100 years old, and then as now, the liqueur is finished with Jamaican rum. According to Sasse, they have been importing this rum directly from Jamaica for almost 100 years.
The Sechser is produced in Schöppingen on the Schöppinger Berg, where the distillery concentrates its entire production process at one location. Sasse is best known for its grain spirits, which mature in the distillery's own barrel store. The Sechser shows the other side of the house: the craft of working with herbs, roots and peels. Its ingredients are organic certified.
For herbal liqueur fans, organic buyers and everyone who appreciates old recipes
The Sechser is the bottle for everyone who likes herbal liqueur and values organic ingredients. For the home bar, it is the classic after-dinner drink, and as a gift, a piece of the Münsterland with a long history. Anyone who prefers to combine herbs with juniper should choose the Grafschafter Kräuterwacholder; an overview of the entire distillery is shown on our Sasse page, other herbal liqueurs in the Liqueurs category. The Sechser is not suitable for anyone expecting a mild, sweet liqueur without herbal bitterness.
