Sasse Winter Plum Liqueur. Natural liqueur made from ripe plums with cinnamon and cloves, fruity and spicy, 17.5% ABV.
Sasse Winter Plum Liqueur is a wintry natural liqueur from the Sasse fine distillery in Schöppingen in the Münsterland region, part of the Naturtalente (Natural Talents) range. Ripe plums meet the distillery's own distillates and spices like cinnamon and cloves – 17.5% ABV, 700 ml.
Sasse's Winter Plum Liqueur carries two fruit names, and both are correct. The "Zwetschge" (damson) is a subspecies of the plum: more elongated, with firmer flesh that releases easily from the stone. In the south, it is usually called Zwetschge, while in the north it is often simply called a plum. A fruit liqueur is created when fruit, alcohol, and sweetness come together. According to EU law, a liqueur must have at least 15% ABV. For its Winter Plum liqueur, Sasse combines plums with its own distillates and adds spice with cinnamon and cloves. The distillery itself calls it a wintry natural liqueur, and that is how it is intended: as a bottle for the cold season.
Sweet plum, cinnamon, and clove in a warm color
In the glass, the liqueur displays a warm color. Its aroma is intense and sweet, carried by ripe plum. Cinnamon and cloves settle over it, providing a spice reminiscent of plum butter and Christmas cookies. At 17.5% ABV, it is a mild liqueur where the fruit is clearly at the forefront, with the spices providing the framework. The sweetness is distinct, but the spices keep it in check, giving the liqueur a round and warm character. Slightly warmed, the cinnamon and clove become more prominent; served cold, the fruit is in the foreground. It is not suitable as a substitute for a dry, clear plum brandy: it is a sweet, spicy liqueur for winter.
Cold, slightly warmed with cream, or as a winter spritz
Sasse recommends the liqueur served cold or warm. The highlight according to the distillery: slightly warmed, with a topping of whipped cream. To prepare, heat it gently in a saucepan or pour it into a pre-warmed cup so that it becomes warm, but never hot. For a winter spritz, top about 4 cl of the liqueur with sparkling wine and garnish with an orange slice. It also has a place in a hot punch. The liqueur has 17.5% ABV; sale only to persons aged 18 and over.
Store the bottle upright in a cool, dark place.
Our tip: Pour a dash of slightly warmed Winter Plum over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Warm meets cold, plum meets vanilla – a quick dessert for Advent evenings.
Distillates from Schöppingen, spices from the winter kitchen
For the Winter Plum, Sasse draws on its own in-house distillates. The fine distillery is located in Schöppingen on the Schöppinger Berg in the Münsterland region, where they distill by hand in traditional copper stills. According to the manufacturer, their history dates back to 1707; in 1985, the company was on the verge of closing. Today, the name Sasse stands primarily for barrel-aged Korn (grain brandy). In addition, the distillery cultivates its "Naturtalente," a range of liqueurs made from fruits, blossoms, cocoa, and coffee. The Winter Plum is their variety for the dark months: ripe plum, cinnamon, and cloves, combined with distillates from their own distillery. According to the manufacturer, production begins with ripe, juicy seasonal plums. The Naturtalente range also includes Elderflower Liqueur and Arabica Coffee Natural Liqueur.
For Advent evenings, punch parties, and as a winter gift
This plum liqueur is the bottle for anyone who prefers something warm in their glass rather than something ice-cold in winter. It pairs well with Advent coffee, small gatherings, or as a gift for cookie baking. Those who prefer their post-dinner drinks fruity but with more strength should reach for the Apricot Honey Liqueur at 35% ABV. You can find more bottles on our Sasse page and in our Liqueurs category. It is less suitable for a summer evening on the terrace; for that, there is the Amérie Münsterländer Aperitif.
