STILVOL. Garden Herbs Rosemary Spirit. Herbal spirit made from German rosemary – spicy, clear, and robust with 40% vol.
STILVOL. Garden Herbs Rosemary Spirit is a spirit made from German rosemary, macerated and distilled in a small distillery in Baden-Württemberg, with 40% vol in a 500 ml bottle. Not a herbal liqueur, not a sweet digestif – a clear schnapps that smells like the herb from the garden bed.
Garden Herbs Rosemary Spirit by STILVOL. is a spirit, and that is more than just a name. Rosemary contains almost no sugar, so it cannot be fermented like a pear. That is why the distiller soaks the herbs in neutral alcohol until the aroma is released. He then distills this infusion and brings the spirit to drinking strength with water. STILVOL. calls the result a high-proof herb garden. That hits the nail on the head: You open the bottle, and the kitchen smells as if you had just rubbed a sprig between your fingers.
Taste
The Rosemary Spirit smells spicy like fresh rosemary and tastes like the herb in its most concentrated form, as STILVOL. describes it.
With 40% vol, it is robust, and the alcohol carries the spice right through to the finish. Like all spirits from STILVOL., it is barely sweetened; the herb stands alone in the glass. The manufacturer calls it a rare and special little sip. That fits: You know rosemary from roast lamb and oven-roasted potatoes, but you rarely encounter it as schnapps. If you are expecting a mild, fruity schnapps, it is better to opt for the Fruit Williams Golden Pear. It is slightly sweet and mellow due to the pears soaked in it.
Usage
STILVOL. recommends drinking the Rosemary Spirit neat at room temperature for all their schnapps varieties. The colder the schnapps, the less of the herb you will taste.
As an aperitif, it works well in a Rosemary Spritz, an idea from the restaurant Rother Ochsen in Laupheim. Add some ice to a champagne or wine glass, along with one to two centiliters of Rosemary Spirit and 8 cl of dry sparkling wine. Stir once and garnish with a fresh sprig of rosemary. For the Rosemary Mule, fill a tumbler or copper mug with ice. Then add 4 cl of Rosemary Spirit, 1 cl of fresh lemon juice, and 15 cl of ginger beer. A little ground pepper and a sprig of rosemary round off the long drink.
Those who prefer it bitter should stir up a Rosemary Negroni: equal parts Rosemary Spirit, white vermouth, and a red bitter aperitif over ice, with a slice of orange. After a hearty meal, however, a small glass neat is sufficient.
Our tip: Rub the rosemary sprig briefly between your hands before adding it to the glass. That way, the spritz will smell like a garden from the very first sip.
Origin
STILVOL. consists of four friends from Baden-Württemberg: Jessica, Markus, Danny, and Markus, village kids from Upper Swabia and Hohenlohe, now at home in Laupheim and Stuttgart. Their goal: to get Williams & Co. out of grandma's cupboard and design classic schnapps in a contemporary way. Their motto is "Preserving tradition and reshaping it."
It is distilled by a small-scale distiller in Baden-Württemberg who macerates and distills the German rosemary. The STILVOL. team bottles every single bottle themselves, corking, labeling, and packing them by hand. STILVOL. deliberately omits artificial additives and added flavorings. The spice in the glass comes solely from the rosemary.
For whom
The Rosemary Spirit is for everyone who prefers herbs in their glass rather than in a liqueur. And for hosts looking for an aperitif that tastes like summer in a herb garden. In its simple bottle with a modern label, it is a gift for people who love to cook and have already tried every fruit brandy.
If you prefer the forest to the garden, try the Coniferous Forest Spruce Spirit made from spruce wood and needles. You can find all the bottles on our STILVOL. page. The spirit has 40% vol, and it is sold to persons 18 years and older. It is not suitable for those looking for a sweet, fruity schnapps – it is spicy and robust.
