José Gourmet Vinho do Porto - 10-Year-Old Port. Tawny port from oak barrels – amber-colored, with dried fruits, coffee, and caramel.
Vinho do Porto - 10-Year-Old Port is a ten-year-old tawny from the Portuguese brand José Gourmet. It is a blend of port wines matured in oak barrels, gold-brown in the glass, with notes of dried fruit, nuts, coffee, and caramel, 19.5% vol, in a 500 ml bottle.
The 10-Year-Old Port from José Gourmet is a tawny, meaning it is a port wine that matures for a long time in wooden barrels. Port wine comes from the Douro Valley in northeastern Portugal. Brandy is added during fermentation, which stops the process, preserving some of the grape sweetness and increasing the alcohol content. For a tawny, this is followed by a long period in the barrel, during which the color shifts from red to amber and gold-brown. The "10 years" age statement describes the character of the blend of wines of different ages. José Gourmet calls it a very versatile tawny – and that is exactly how we want to introduce it to you.
Taste
In the glass, the port appears amber with a gold-brown shimmer. On the nose, there are dried fruits and nuts, followed by coffee and caramel. On the palate, it is full-bodied, yet fresh and balanced, as a lively acidity offsets the sweetness. The long finish reveals spicy notes.
The barrel shapes this wine more than the fruit does. Those expecting a young, deep-red port with fresh berry notes will find nuts and caramel here instead. It is less suitable for those looking for a dry wine: the sweetness is part of the style.
Usage
José Gourmet recommends the tawny with Portuguese desserts. They suggest Leite-creme, the Portuguese vanilla custard with a caramelized sugar crust, as well as apple pie, fruit salad, or vanilla or macadamia ice cream. The port wine picks up the caramel and nut notes of the desserts and extends them.
It also pairs well with a cheese board, especially with aged hard cheese and blue cheese with a few walnuts. Serve it slightly chilled at about 14 to 16 °C in a small white wine or port glass. Store the bottle upright, cool, and in the dark. A tawny has already spent its time in the barrel. Once opened, it will therefore keep for a few weeks if kept tightly sealed and stored in a cool place. You can therefore enjoy it at your leisure over several weeks.
Our tip: Pour a small sip of tawny over a scoop of vanilla ice cream and sprinkle with a few toasted almonds – a dessert in two minutes.
Origin
José Gourmet is a Portuguese brand known primarily for its illustrated tinned fish. It is backed by the company 100MISTERIOS, Lda. In addition to preserves, pâtés, and olive oil, the brand also offers liqueurs and spirits – and exactly one port wine, this ten-year-old tawny.
The brand states that it selects artisanal products and aims to act as an intermediary between producers and connoisseurs. The short text about the port on the website was written by Eugénio Roda, who also writes the stories for the preserves. The port itself comes, like all port wine, from the Douro Valley with its steep, terraced vineyards. It gets its name from the city of Porto at the mouth of the Douro, from where the wine was once shipped out to the world.
For whom
The tawny is the bottle for the end of a meal: with dessert, with cheese, or simply as a glass on a Sunday evening. It makes a great gift for hosts who enjoy cooking and are planning a dessert. It is also a lovely gift for anyone who misses a bottle of tawny from their vacation in Portugal. And because a small glass is sufficient, one bottle lasts for many evenings.
For a Portuguese evening, combine it with the trout pâté with port wine as a starter. For a light aperitif, try the white port wine. You can find everything else from the brand on our José Gourmet page.
At 19.5% vol, port wine is a wine fortified with brandy. It contains sulfites. Sales are restricted to persons aged 18 and over. It is not suitable for pregnant women, children, adolescents, or anyone currently abstaining from alcohol.
