s guate Tröpfle “Orange Utan” Orange Liqueur. Orange liqueur made from select oranges, fresh and slightly bitter, 25.8% ABV, 500 ml.
s guate Tröpfle “Orange Utan” Orange Liqueur is a fruit liqueur from the liqueur manufactory run by Andrea and Oliver in Durchhausen, in the district of Tuttlingen. Select oranges, prepared by hand, 25.8% ABV, 500 ml in a bottle featuring an orangutan on the label. No added flavorings, no colorings, no preservatives – the orange itself provides the color, freshness, and light bitterness.
“Orange Utan” Orange Liqueur by s guate Tröpfle is a liqueur for which oranges are steeped in alcohol until they have released their aroma, color, and flavor – maceration, done by hand, as with all liqueurs from Durchhausen. The name is a play on words with the monkey on the label, but the contents are serious. The producer uses exclusively select oranges and describes the liqueur as fresh and slightly bitter, with an intense orange flavor. This sets it apart from many liqueurs of this type, which are primarily sweet.
Sunny citrus aromas, fresh on the palate, slightly bitter finish
The liqueur smells of orange peel and ripe fruit; the producer speaks of a sunny delight with intense citrus aromas. On the palate, it is fresh, then the sweetness emerges, followed by a slight bitterness at the end that belongs to the orange.
This bitterness is the reason why Orange Utan is also enjoyed by people who otherwise avoid sweet liqueurs – it keeps the liqueur dry and leaves you wanting another sip. At 25.8% ABV, it has strength; the alcohol carries the citrus aromas and remains warm on the finish. Anyone expecting a thick, syrupy liqueur will find this one leaner and more tart. According to the producer, the alcohol content may vary depending on the batch; the label is authoritative.
Neat for tasting, on ice, in sparkling wine, or in the chocolate kitchen
The producer recommends Orange Utan as a liqueur for tasting and for an evening with friends. Drink it neat at room temperature from a small glass, two centiliters, in small sips; the producer generally recommends room temperature for their liqueurs.
Served over ice with an orange zest, it makes an aperitif; one centiliter in a champagne flute with dry sparkling wine makes an Orange Spritz. In the kitchen, it goes well in chocolate mousse, over crêpes, and in sauce for duck. After opening, the bottle should be kept in the refrigerator and finished within a few weeks, as the producer avoids preservatives. With 25.8% ABV, the liqueur is a spirit: sale permitted from age 18.
Our tip: Pour four centiliters of Orange Utan over ice with cold tonic water and add an orange slice – a bitterly fresh long drink for an evening on the balcony.
Select oranges, handmade between the Black Forest and Lake Constance
s guate Tröpfle is the liqueur manufactory of Andrea and Oliver in Durchhausen, a village in the district of Tuttlingen between the Black Forest and Lake Constance. All liqueurs are crafted there by hand through maceration, from the initial preparation to bottling and shipping.
Much of what the manufactory uses grows in the immediate vicinity – oranges, of course, do not, and the producer is open about this: for ingredients from further afield, they focus on quality, whether regional or not. For Orange Utan, this means select oranges that are prepared by hand in Durchhausen. Many of the house's recipes date back to family recipes and old books; before a liqueur goes on sale, it is given time to store and mature. The producer does not specify the origin of the oranges.
For citrus fans, tonic mixers, and as a gift with a wink
Orange Utan is the bottle for anyone who likes orange in the glass but wants to taste the fruit and its bitterness. The label with the orangutan makes it a gift that will be the first topic of conversation at any party.
The Hazelnut Liqueur made from roasted nuts is nuttier and more robust, while the Pinot Noir Liqueur is wine-like and aged for a year. You can find all bottles from Durchhausen on our s guate Tröpfle page, and other liqueurs from different producers in the Liqueurs category. This liqueur is not suitable for those who prefer very sweet and very mild drinks – bitterness and 25.8% ABV are part of the experience here.
