Sasse Münsterländer Lagerkorn V.S.O.P. barrel-aged grain spirit from ex-Cognac barriques, soft with vanilla and malt, 32% ABV, 500 ml – from Schöppingen in the Münsterland.
Sasse Münsterländer Lagerkorn V.S.O.P. is a barrel-aged grain spirit from the Sasse fine distillery in Schöppingen, Münsterland. Distilled from a combination of malted grains with local raw materials, it is matured for at least four years in barriques that previously contained Cognac – 32% ABV, 500 ml. Not a clear spirit from the freezer, not a party schnapps, not a whiskey substitute – a soft, golden spirit for the nosing glass.
Münsterländer Lagerkorn V.S.O.P. by Sasse is the spirit the fine distillery calls its "heart and soul." A *Lagerkorn* is a grain spirit that, after distillation, spends years in wooden barrels before bottling. There, it absorbs color, vanilla, and woody notes, while the rough edges of the young distillate are smoothed out. The four letters on the label come from the world of Cognac: V.S.O.P. stands for "Very Superior Old Pale," designating at least four years of barrel aging. According to the manufacturer, this is the only German grain spirit matured in oak barriques long enough to carry this designation. For each bottling, Sasse tastes up to 50 barriques from three age categories and blends them together. Imagine a Sunday evening: the table has been cleared, the bottle is still there. And those who previously thought of *Korn* as ice-cold shots will suddenly smell vanilla.
Vanilla, white chocolate, and malt in the glass
The Lagerkorn tastes soft, warm, and elegant. Up front, there are bright notes of vanilla and white chocolate. Beneath that lies a sweet-malty style, and the spicy roasted aromas of the malt remain clearly recognizable. Fine Cognac notes and warm woody aromas come from the barriques. Sasse summarizes this character with its own term: "Münsterland Mildness."
The barrel aging is first visible in the color, a warm gold that the spirit acquires from the oak. In the nose, honey can emerge alongside the vanilla, while the palate reveals a hint of hazelnut – that is how the distillery describes it elsewhere. At 32% ABV, it is significantly gentler than the 40% barrel-aged spirits from the same producer. Those looking for a bolder, spicier side will find it in the Cigar Special, made from rye and barley malt. And those expecting smoky, peaty notes are better off with the Atlantik Finish.
Neat at room temperature, with chocolate, and in cocktails
The Lagerkorn is best enjoyed neat at 17 to 21°C (63–70°F), which is roughly room temperature. Sasse recommends a nosing or tumbler glass to allow the aromas to collect. Give the spirit a few minutes after pouring; then the vanilla opens up and the malt notes follow. As a digestif, it pairs well after a light meal, and according to the manufacturer, it also goes well with dark chocolate or a mild cigar. This is a spirit with 32% ABV; sale only to persons aged 18 and over.
For drinks, the distillery recommends two of its own recipes. The "Margarita Regional" combines 50 ml of Lagerkorn with 20 ml of Grafschafter herbal juniper spirit, 30 ml of lime juice, and 20 ml of agave syrup. Shake vigorously and strain into a pre-chilled cocktail glass with a salted rim, garnished with a slice of lime. The "Indian Summer Highball" is the longer version: 20 ml Lagerkorn, 30 ml cocoa-nut liqueur, and 10 ml lemon juice, topped with Bitter Lemon. In both drinks, the grain spirit adds its vanilla character instead of just providing alcohol.
Store the bottle upright, in a cool, dark place. According to the manufacturer, the Lagerkorn remains stable in flavor for many months even after being opened, provided it is well-sealed. A refrigerator is unnecessary; a cupboard or home bar is sufficient.
Our tip: Place a piece of dark chocolate next to the glass and try them alternately. The vanilla in the Lagerkorn and the bitter cocoa notes complement each other perfectly.
An old bottle of Korn, a St. Nicholas evening, and the Schöppinger Berg
The idea for the Lagerkorn was born on St. Nicholas Eve in December 1987. Rüdiger Sasse, today's managing director of the fine distillery, found an old bottle of *Korn* that his great-grandfather Theo Sasse had distilled. Two years earlier, the distillery in Schöppingen had been on the verge of collapse. From that discovery came the idea to age *Korn* in barrels again and give it the time usually reserved for Cognac or whiskey.
To this day, everything happens in one place in the Münsterland. Sasse distills by hand in traditional stills and then places the Lagerkorn in their own barrel warehouse. This warehouse, called the "Reifugium" by the distillery, stands on the Schöppinger Berg, and the barrels experience all four seasons there. Through the alternation of summer heat and winter cold, the wood "works," and the spirit gains depth with every passing year. The water for production comes from the distillery's own well. Thus, the Lagerkorn contains not only regional grain but also the climate of the Münsterland.
For connoisseurs at home and lovers of barrel-aged spirits
Lagerkorn is the bottle for connoisseurs at home—anyone who enjoys relaxing with a glass in an armchair in the evening and discovering something new. If you like Cognac or mild whiskey, you will find familiar barrel notes here, but based on grain from the Münsterland. For *Korn* skeptics, it is an invitation to reconsider their opinion. And as a souvenir from Westphalia, it tells its own story: the old bottle from the great-grandfather, the barrel warehouse on the hill, and the four letters from the world of Cognac. For those who enjoy hosting guests, it provides a great conversation starter in the glass. For those wishing to sample it or for traveling, the Lagerkorn V.S.O.P. in a 200 ml bottle is available. You can find all the distillery's spirits and liqueurs on our Sasse page. The Lagerkorn is not suitable for those looking for an ice-cold clear schnapps; it needs room temperature and a glass with space for the nose.
