Sasse Butterscotch Liqueur. Caramel liqueur made from hand-stirred butter caramel, creamy and full-bodied, 16% vol.
Sasse Butterscotch Liqueur is a caramel liqueur from the Sasse fine distillery in Schöppingen, Münsterland. It is based on hand-stirred caramel made from real butter according to a traditional recipe, and according to the manufacturer, contains no added artificial flavors – 16% vol, 700 ml.
Butterscotch Liqueur by Sasse takes its name from a British confection. Butterscotch is a caramel made from butter and brown sugar, slowly cooked down until it is golden brown and dense. While plain caramel is often made from sugar alone, butterscotch thrives on the flavor of the butter. Sasse stirs the caramel for its liqueur by hand, using real butter and a proven recipe. The result is a liqueur with 16% vol that brings exactly that flavor into the glass. The distillery markets it under the motto "Craftsmanship meets flavor." It is one of the newer liqueurs in the house's range.
Intense butter caramel, creamy and full-bodied
The taste is exactly what the name promises: intense butterscotch. On the palate, the liqueur is creamy and full-bodied, with the rounded sweetness of caramel and the soft notes of butter. Sasse describes it as creamy, full-bodied, and authentic. With 16% vol, the alcohol remains in the background while the sweetness takes center stage. This makes it a liqueur that is more reminiscent of a dessert than a spirit. Think of the caramel that turns golden brown at the bottom of the pan when butter and sugar come together. That is exactly the direction it takes, only in liquid form and in a small glass. Anyone expecting a tart or dry digestif has come to the wrong place with this sweet liqueur.
Neat, over ice, in coffee, or in an Old Fashioned
The distillery suggests many ways to enjoy their butterscotch: neat as a digestif, over ice, in coffee, or in cocktails like the Old Fashioned. Sasse also recommends a glass after a steak, and it is explicitly intended for refining desserts. A shot in hot coffee turns the cup into a little dessert. Drizzled over pancakes, baked apples, or vanilla pudding, it brings a touch of caramel to the plate. The liqueur has 16% vol; it is sold only to persons aged 18 and over.
Store the bottle upright, in a cool, dark place.
Our tip: Use the butterscotch in an Old Fashioned in place of sugar syrup and combine it with the Cigar Special. Its caramel and honey notes pair well with the butter.
Hand-stirred in Münsterland, at a distillery known for Korn
The butterscotch is produced in Schöppingen in Münsterland at a distillery that otherwise primarily distills Korn and ages it in barrels. For the liqueur, the caramel is stirred by hand there, using real butter and a traditional recipe. Sasse speaks of 700 ml of craftsmanship from Münsterland. This fits the house's ambition to restore the status of German Korn as a high-quality spirit, relying on manual labor. The fine distillery is managed by Rüdiger Sasse and operates as Lagerkorn GmbH. Everything is produced at a single location on the Schöppinger Berg. The fact that a Korn distillery makes a caramel liqueur shows the versatility of the house: from ten-year-aged Lagerkorn to sweet liqueur for your afternoon coffee.
For those with a sweet tooth, coffee drinkers, and dessert fans
The Butterscotch Liqueur is the bottle for anyone who can't resist caramel. In winter, it belongs with your afternoon coffee; after a barbecue, it belongs on the dessert plate. It makes a great gift for anyone who likes things sweet. If you prefer your caramel with a pinch of salt and milk, try the Paula Pumpernickel Salted Caramel Liqueur.
