Kohl Apple Juice with Apple Mint. Apple juice beverage made from mountain apple juice and apple mint extract – cool, spicy, and fresh in the finish.
Kohl Apple Juice with Apple Mint is a beverage consisting of 99.2% mountain apple juice and 0.8% apple mint extract. It comes from the CUVÉE line by Thomas Kohl in Unterinn on the Ritten, South Tyrol. The 750 ml bottle is made without added sugar, preservatives, or additives.
Apple juice with apple mint by Kohl belongs to the kind of day when the terrace is already glowing in the sun by noon. The table is set, the salad bowl is ready, and everyone reaches for something cold first. Water is too plain, lemonade too sweet. This is where a bottle that brings together apple and mint fits perfectly. Important for context: according to the manufacturer, this is a beverage made from apple juice and apple mint extract, not a pure fruit juice. The juice makes up almost the entire content at 99.2%, with the apple mint extract accounting for only 0.8%. This small amount is enough to change the character. Kohl calls apple mint the mild sister of peppermint. It has an unmistakable scent, provides freshness, and feels less sharp than its well-known relative. In the product range, this bottle belongs to the CUVÉE line. There, Thomas Kohl combines his mountain apple juice with fruits, blossoms, or herbs, whereas the GOURMET line contains only one apple variety at a time.
Taste
This cuvée tastes first of full-bodied, aromatic mountain apple and then of cool mint. According to the manufacturer, the apple juice plays the leading role. The mint joins in rather than masking it.
The scent of mint rises from the glass as soon as you pour it. It is softer than peppermint tea, slightly greener and rounder. On the palate, the fruit sweetness of the apple comes first, carried by a fresh acidity. Then the apple mint settles over it, with a fine spiciness and a cooling impression. Thomas Kohl describes a long, clear finish of mint. Indeed, the freshness remains in the mouth for a while after the glass has been placed back on the table.
This interplay makes the juice a true summer drink. It feels lighter than a pure apple juice, even though it consists almost entirely of apple juice. Anyone who generally avoids mint will hardly warm up to this bottle, as the herbal note is clearly noticeable. Those who like fresh mint in their glass will find a ready-made mixture here that saves you the need for a herb garden and mortar. You can pour the juice directly from the fridge, and every glass tastes equally fresh of mint.
Use
Serve the apple juice with apple mint well-chilled at 8 to 10 °C, preferably in a stemmed glass. Thomas Kohl recommends it as an aperitif, with finger food, summer salads, and light starters. These combinations have one thing in common: freshness, lightness, and often a salty or acidic note.
As an aperitif, it kicks off a barbecue or garden party. It pairs wonderfully with finger food, such as vegetable sticks with yogurt dip, falafel, puff pastry sticks, or melon with ham. With summer salads, it picks up on herbs and citrus. Think of tabbouleh with parsley and lemon, a cucumber salad with dill, or watermelon with feta. The mint in the juice finds its counterparts on the plate here.
It is also a good choice for light starters, for example with cold cucumber soup, fried halloumi, or zucchini carpaccio. It is at its best when enjoyed pure. Mixed with a little mineral water, it becomes a light spritzer for the afternoon. Once opened, keep it in the refrigerator and drink it within six days according to the manufacturer. Store the unopened bottle in a cool, dark place.
Our tip: Fill a carafe halfway with the Kohl mint cuvée, top up with chilled sparkling water, and add a thin slice of cucumber to the glass. This way, you have a summery spritzer to go with your tabbouleh.
Origin
The base of this cuvée is mountain apple juice from the Troidner fruit farm in Unterinn on the Ritten. The farm is located a few hundred meters above Bolzano, and the apple orchards reach almost 1,000 meters above sea level. Thomas Kohl, whose family has lived on the Ritten for generations, converted the farm to fruit growing with his father and later took it over.
He presses his juices on the farm. The apples are harvested between August and October, each tree in two to three passes, individually and by hand. A few hours after harvest, they undergo quality inspection, washing, milling, and pressing. Afterward, the juice rests so that the suspended particles can settle. Kohl refers to this as a natural filtering process. Before bottling, the juice is heated and thus preserved.
The idea behind the CUVÉE line is reminiscent of viticulture, which Thomas Kohl likes to use as a comparison. He wants to create apple juices that have never existed in this form before. In addition to apple mint, there are cuvées with apricot, pear, or elderflower. They all share the Ritten mountain apple juice as a foundation. According to the data sheet, Kohl's juices carry the vegan label of the European Vegetarian Union. The cuvée with apple mint stands on the shelf next to the other cuvées as the variety with herbal freshness.
For whom
The Kohl Apple Juice with Apple Mint is for everyone who wants something fresh and non-alcoholic in their glass during the summer. It is also a good companion for lunch on the terrace, especially with salads and grilled food. According to the manufacturer, the drink contains none of the 14 major allergens. The Apple Juice with Elderflower is more floral and equally summery. If you like your apple pure and mild, reach for the Mountain Apple Juice Jonagold.
