Fang die Nuss Walnut Liqueur. Walnut liqueur, slightly tart and spicy, 30% ABV, 500 ml – from Munich.
Fang die Nuss Walnut Liqueur is a walnut liqueur from Munich: full-bodied, slightly tart and spicy, 30% ABV, 500 ml in an apothecary bottle, produced in small batches in an Upper Bavarian craft distillery. Not a cream liqueur, not a sweet liqueur, and not a bitter liqueur made from green walnuts – it is a robust nut liqueur that also holds its own in a cocktail.
Walnut Liqueur by Fang die Nuss is the Bavarian take on the classic Italian walnut liqueur – as described by the manufacturer itself. The traditional version is made from green, unripe walnuts and is quite bitter as a result. Fang die Nuss takes a different approach: milder and more rounded, with fewer bitter notes, but with a strong walnut core that, according to the producer, provides real walnut depth instead of an artificial note. Imagine it ice-cold, straight from the freezer, after a Christmas dinner or with stollen – a small glass where the walnut takes center stage.
Full-bodied, slightly tart, spicy – walnut with depth instead of sugar
The liqueur tastes strongly of walnuts, slightly tart and spicy, as described by Fang die Nuss. The bitter notes of the Italian original are toned down, while the walnut core remains bold. Drunk neat and ice-cold, the aroma remains intense while the sweetness recedes.
At 30% ABV, it is significantly stronger than the Hazelnut Liqueur at 18% ABV: nut and alcohol carry the flavor, while the sweetness only accompanies it. According to the manufacturer, the liqueur is vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free. Regarding labeling: it contains walnuts, which are tree nuts.
Ice-cold neat, in an Old Fashioned, in espresso, and over vanilla ice cream
Serving it neat and ice-cold is the manufacturer's recommendation. Put the bottle in the freezer and serve the liqueur in a small glass. On the rocks, Fang die Nuss suggests serving it with a large ice sphere and a toasted hazelnut as a garnish. It is a spirit with 30% ABV; it may only be sold to persons 18 years or older.
At the bar, the liqueur replaces sugar syrup in a Walnut Old Fashioned, and in a Hazelnut Sour, it adds a tart twist. In espresso or filter coffee, 2 cl is sufficient. In the kitchen, it is a baking liqueur: for nut cakes, tiramisu, chocolate desserts, and ganache, as a glaze over stollen, or like syrup poured directly over vanilla ice cream.
Store in a cool, dark place; after opening, the bottle should be kept in the refrigerator and, according to the manufacturer, should be finished within twelve months.
Our tip: For a Walnut Old Fashioned, replace the sugar syrup with the liqueur, stir over a large ice cube, and express an orange twist over the top – the tart walnut takes over for the sweetness and carries the whiskey.
From Munich, produced in Upper Bavaria – the most unusual of the three varieties
Fang die Nuss is a Munich-based brand from Falk and Mike, who come from the event and catering industry. Since 2020, everything has revolved around nuts for the two. The walnut liqueur is produced in an Upper Bavarian craft distillery in small batches. The manufacturer does not specify the origin of the walnuts; however, production in Upper Bavaria and the company headquarters in Munich are confirmed.
According to the manufacturer, the walnut liqueur is the most unusual of the three varieties. The squirrel on the label is part of the brand: "Tested by local squirrels" is the slogan, and according to the manufacturer, a donation is made for every bottle sold to the *Eichhörnchen Notruf e. V.* (Squirrel Emergency Call association), which cares for injured and orphaned squirrels.
For walnut fans, the home bar, and those who already have everything
The Walnut Liqueur is the bottle for anyone who finds hazelnut too mild and sweet nut liqueurs too sugary. Tart, spicy, 30% ABV – the liqueur for your home bar that stands up in an Old Fashioned, and the bottle for baking that gives nut cake real depth. And as a gift, it is an idea for people who already have everything. Its softer sister is the Hazelnut Liqueur, and the dry variety is the Hazelnut Schnapps at 36% ABV. You can find all three on our Fang die Nuss page, and other liqueurs in the Liqueurs category. The liqueur is not suitable for anyone with a tree nut allergy or for those looking for a mild, sweet dessert liqueur – it is too tart and too robust for that.
