HÖHL'S Pomp Organic Aperitif non-alcoholic dry-tart 750 ml is a non-alcoholic organic aperitif with 0.0% alcohol made from apple, gooseberry, cucumber and currant juice. 21 botanicals such as turmeric, cardamom, bitter orange blossom and Pu-Erh tea give it its tart character. It comes in a 0.75 l bottle from Maintal near Frankfurt.

POMP Organic Aperitif Dry-Tart by DR. HÖHL'S is a ready-mixed non-alcoholic long drink with carbonation. "Feinherb" (dry-tart) describes a flavor in beverages that lies between dry and sweet and is characterized by bitter notes. This exact bitterness is missing in many non-alcoholic drinks, which are often simply sweet. The dry-tart POMP gets it from plants. The juice consists of apple, gooseberry, currant and 6.6% cucumber juice. Added to this are extracts of turmeric, cardamom, coriander, ginger, bitter orange blossom, daisies, Pu-Erh tea, cubeb pepper, spices and herbs. The manufacturer does not add any sugar, nor any artificial flavors.

Taste

The first impression is fresh and green. Notes of orange blossom and fresh cucumber rise to the nose, backed by oriental spices like cardamom and coriander. On the palate, there is a dry-tart cucumber freshness. Green tea notes from the Pu-Erh and an earthy trace of turmeric are added. Fine bitter notes run through each sip, with a subtle smokiness in the background. The finish is bittersweet and extended, as described by DR. HÖHL'S. Anyone looking for a fruity-sweet aperitif will find the "Feinherb" too intense.

Usage

Serve the dry-tart POMP well chilled at 8 °C. According to the manufacturer, it tastes great neat over ice, with a slice of cucumber and a sprig of rosemary. It is a ready-made long drink that requires no further mixing. As a botanical filler, it lengthens non-alcoholic cocktails and gives them a tart base, similar to tonic.

As an aperitif before dinner, it prepares the palate for the meal. It goes particularly well with appetizers like cucumber salad with yogurt, shrimp with chili, or a plate of olives and almonds. It is also a harmonious accompaniment to spicy dishes from oriental cuisine, such as falafel with tahini. DR. HÖHL'S lists parties, events, catering and baby showers as suitable occasions. For a non-alcoholic spritz, fill a wine glass with ice, add an orange slice and pour the dry-tart aperitif over it. A dash of grapefruit juice makes it even tarter. According to the manufacturer, the unopened bottle keeps for two years; once opened, it is best sealed with a champagne stopper.

Our tip: Shave a long slice of cucumber and place it on the rim of a large wine glass. Filled with ice and POMP Dry-Tart, the drink looks like it came straight from a bar.

Origin

In 2018, DR. HÖHL'S launched the dry-tart variety, one year after the fruity organic aperitif. Behind it is the Höhl family from Hochstadt, a district of Maintal near Frankfurt. According to their own account, they have been processing apples since 1779, now in the ninth generation. Johanna, Johannes and Anna run the company together.

The POMP brand has existed since 2008. Johanna Höhl continued it as an independent brand at the time after the family's cider mill was sold in 2007. With the organic 0.0 aperitifs, POMP gained a non-alcoholic line. The ingredients come from organic farming in the EU, control body DE-ÖKO-006. The list of ingredients does not include any of the 14 main allergens.
