pHenomenal Autumn in New York. Ready-to-serve Manhattan premix cocktail with rye whiskey, chestnut spirit, and vermouth, 34.7% vol.
The pHenomenal Autumn in New York Manhattan Premix Cocktail is a pre-mixed Manhattan from pHenomenal Drinks in Hamburg. It combines rye whiskey from the Münsterland region with chestnut spirit from the Southern Palatinate, a house blend of vermouth, and a dash of Angostura bitters. 34.7% vol, 350 ml. No mixing glass, no measuring – just chill and pour.
The Autumn in New York by pHenomenal is a premix cocktail, meaning it comes pre-mixed in the bottle. It is modeled after the Manhattan, one of the great bar classics. It likely originated in New York towards the end of the 19th century, made from American whiskey, red vermouth, and bitters, stirred cold over ice. Although it consists of only a few ingredients, the Manhattan is still considered a classic today, enjoyed almost everywhere in the world. pHenomenal calls its version an autumnal twist on the classic. This is also where the name comes from, even though the cocktail is created in Hamburg and not in New York.
Taste
The Autumn in New York tastes of rye whiskey, vermouth, bitter spice, and a nutty note of chestnut. That is the autumnal twist on the Manhattan.
The base is formed by a rye whiskey from the Münsterland region. Added to this is a chestnut spirit from a Southern Palatinate distillery, which the producer describes as very rare. A spirit (Geist) is created by macerating fruits or nuts in alcohol and then distilling them. The house-blend vermouth adds sweetness and herbs, while the dash of Angostura provides the typical bitter spice. At 34.7% vol, the Autumn in New York is significantly stronger than the Negroni from the same manufacturer. Those expecting a light aperitif will find it heavy and warming.
Usage
To serve, pour 6 to 8 cl of the well-chilled cocktail into a frozen cocktail glass. This is the manufacturer's recommendation.
Alternatively, stir the cocktail briefly over ice and then strain it into the frozen glass. Stirring cools it down further and dilutes it slightly, just like a classic Manhattan at a bar. For this, place the cocktail glass in the freezer for some time beforehand. The Autumn in New York is perfect for a long evening, after dinner, or for a chat by the fireplace.
Our tip: The 350 ml bottle is enough for four to five drinks. Store it in the refrigerator so the serving temperature is reached immediately, and you only need the frozen glass.
Origin
The Autumn in New York comes from pHenomenal Drinks in Hamburg. The brand is led by founder and owner Hendrik Schaulin.
pHenomenal began in late 2012 with a handmade tonic syrup, followed by the ginger syrup in 2013. In 2017, the NEGRONI our style became the first ready-to-serve cocktail, developed as a gift for a tailor friend. Since then, Schaulin has expanded the range to include bottled cocktails that reinterpret well-known classics. They are intended to take the work off the hands of home hosts and allow venues without their own bartender to offer cocktails of consistent quality. Schaulin studied fashion design in Paris and has been collecting bar books for many years.
As with the Negroni, pHenomenal relies on spirits from Germany for the Autumn in New York as well. In the Negroni, it is the double juniper spirit from Eversbusch in Hagen; here, it is the rye whiskey from Münsterland and the chestnut spirit from the Southern Palatinate. The house-blend vermouth is put together by pHenomenal itself.
For whom
The Autumn in New York is for anyone who loves Manhattan and whiskey cocktails. It suits cool evenings and hosts who want to serve a classic with a personal twist. As a gift, it will surprise whiskey enthusiasts who already have many bottles at their home bar.
If you prefer something more bitter and slightly lighter, try the NEGRONI our style. You can find all syrups, cocktails, and accessories on our pHenomenal Drinks page. Sale permitted from age 18. It is not suitable for those looking for a mild or low-alcohol drink.
