- Tomatoes bring fruity freshness and color to the plate.
Ingredients for tomato salad
- Which tomatoes are best for salad? Roma, plum, or bottle tomatoes have more firm flesh than watery flesh and are therefore perfect for making tomato salad. Depending on your preference, you can also use vine tomatoes. Tomatoes only taste good in season. During the colder months, we recommend winter salads. How about beetroot salad with honey-mustard dressing or lamb's lettuce with raspberry vinegar vinaigrette?
- Basil tastes best fresh. You can get the potted plant at the supermarket year-round. Stems in plastic packaging are prone to germ growth and are bad for the environment. Otherwise, it’s better to check the freezer section or reach for dried herbs.
- Red onions are less sharp but more aromatic than white onions. The delicate flavor goes excellently with tomato salad.
- Garlic provides a spicy note and should preferably be chopped. When pressed, the essential oils are released into the air prematurely. It smells great in the kitchen, but the flavor doesn't make it into the salad.
- A good marinade consists of high-quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The spicy and sweet vinegar aroma softens the tomato acidity and rounds off the salad with a full-bodied finish. The olive oil provides a Mediterranean fruity note.
- Honey adds a subtle sweetness to the composition and also softens the acidity of the tomatoes.
Optional ingredients
- Feta complements the tomato salad with a savory taste and adds a creamy consistency. We recommend real sheep's milk feta. It simply tastes more aromatic than soft cheese made from cow's milk.
- Arugula and tomato are a popular combination. You can simply place a few fresh leaves on the prepared salad and, depending on your preference, sprinkle with Parmesan.
- Cilantro harmonizes brilliantly with tomato. Wash, dry, and chop the herbs. It tastes heavenly and goes perfectly with lamb!
- Dill or parsley are also suitable for refining tomato salad. The herbs taste stronger when fresh. But dill, in particular, also has a great aroma when dried.
- Croutons can be made quickly and easily from old bread. Simply toast them in a pan with a little butter or olive oil and serve with the tomato salad.
