Jörg Geiger Aecht Bitter non-alcoholic. Sparkling bitter aperitif based on pear juice with Green Hunting Pear, gooseberry, and wormwood – tart, fresh, and long.

Jörg Geiger Aecht Bitter non-alcoholic is a sparkling aperitif from Schlat at the foot of the Swabian Alb. It is based on 60% pear juice, characterized by the tannin-rich juice of the Green Hunting Pear (Grüne Jagdbirne), with added gooseberry and quince juice, wormwood, yarrow, as well as orange, acacia, and elderflower blossoms. 0.0% alcohol, 750 ml. Not a sparkling wine, not a bitter liqueur – a tart, juice-based aperitif.

Aecht Bitter by Jörg Geiger is a pear juice-based beverage with herbs and spices, as stated on the label. Behind it lies an original composition that makes bitterness its theme. Nothing is fermented: juices, blossoms, and herbs are combined and carbonated. The star is the Green Hunting Pear, also known as the Metzer culinary pear. It is tart and so rich in tannins that it was once used as a "clarifying pear" to settle fruit wines. In Swabian, this astringent character is called "räs." The producer describes it as an alcohol-free commitment to the bitter note.

Taste

The nose reveals tart herbal notes and wormwood, accompanied by the scent of white and yellow blossoms. Orange blossom, acacia, and elderflower provide the floral notes, while yarrow and wormwood provide the spice.

On the palate, there is first a brief, pear-like fruit sweetness. Then a refreshing acidity takes over, carried by the red gooseberry. In the mid-palate, fine bitter notes emerge, building up into the long finish. The wormwood is sparingly dosed, at 0.002 percent according to the manufacturer. The bitter note is built from the tannins of the Hunting Pear, yarrow, and wormwood. The 7 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters come from the juices.

Those looking for fruit and sweetness in an aperitif will find it too severe. However, it is not as bitter as the name suggests.

Usage

Drink this bitter aperitif well-chilled at 8 to 10 °C in a champagne flute as a tart aperitif before a meal. At the table, it belongs in a white wine glass, paired with poached white fish in light sauces – this is the manufacturer's recommendation. The acidity of the gooseberry and the fine bitter note provide a fresh counterpoint to the mild fish, similar to a dry white wine.

As a mixed drink, the manufacturer suggests two variations in a tumbler: with 4 cl of "Don't call me Gin" or with 4 cl of "WEHMUT" apple vermouth wine. Both drinks then contain alcohol and are intended for adults only.

Our tip: For the non-alcoholic aperitif, use a glass with ice, Aecht Bitter, and a slice of orange. The orange blossom in the drink and the peel in the glass echo each other perfectly.

Origin

The Jörg Geiger manufactory is located in Schlat at the foot of the Swabian Alb. Jörg Geiger is a trained chef and took over his parents' inn, the Lamm, in 1997 at the age of 22. In 1998, he began working with the Champagne culinary pear, and in 2003, he bottled the first PriSecco.

The raw material is Swabian meadow fruit: old, often tart apple and pear varieties from traditional orchards in the region, supplied by local farmers. The Green Hunting Pear is one of them, an old native perry pear. The manufactory also counts wormwood and yarrow among the meadow and forest herbs it works with. All steps from delivery to bottling take place in the manufactory.

For whom

This is the bottle for anyone who drinks tonic water straight, likes grapefruit, and seeks a tart profile in an aperitif. It suits an evening after work during the week, a fish dinner with guests who are driving, and the home bar as a filler for bitter drinks.

For mixes with alcohol, there is the apple vermouth wine from the same producer or the apple brandy Don't call me Gin. You can find more information on our Jörg Geiger page. Aecht Bitter is not suitable for those who expect a fruity-sweet sparkling wine substitute.

Green Hunting Pear, gooseberry, and wormwood, sparkling and non-alcoholic – the tart aperitif by Jörg Geiger for those who appreciate bitterness.
